Marching on, the WSF struggles through it's first day
It’s been a long day. Really, is being a long day, as it’s not over. In a couple hours i’m going to go to the Z Magazine dinner which i always consider a highlight of the WSF activities. I managed to get a working battery for my used cell phone, so now in theory i’ll be easier to find. The reality is i’ve mostly been in the indymedia office tucked behind the Babel’s translation center.
I spent a while running around with Majid (i think that’s his name), one of the Tunisian coders who has put together their Nomad project. It’s a pretty cool system. They’re having problems with their c program updating the qt interface to tell the main computer which translators are translating and which are not. They asked me to help, but my qt experience is quite limited.
While we were looking at the code, we got a radio call. Apparently translation had fallen apart in conference hall too. For the hell of it ran over with them, and it was easy to fix. We just swapped out the box, each box has all the software installed so it was easy to turn one of translator boxes in to a main controller box.
The rest of my day has been taken up with some indymedia stuff, taking some photos, helping with a feature, and generally puttering around.
It’s hard to explain the WSF grounds in Mumbai. It’s very dusty and incredibly crowded. Just packed with people. Did i mention the dust? It’s everywhere, seeping in to my pores…
