Hacking cellphones

Last night we had a revival of hacknight, there were just four of us, but we managed to play with the telit gm862 gsm module i bought a couple months ago. It’s the module which is the core of most people’s dyi cell phones which got covered today in cnet.

It seems the documentation and libraries have improved a lot in the last two months. Now there are real specs, drivers, and the like. We were unable to get a fully working system, but we were able to detect the module, send it commands, and get it to throw errors. Well it’s a start. Surj Patel has been pulling together the info from various people hacking dyi cellphones.

It’s amazing the possibilities of social software which could be possible on mobile devices if it weren’t for the evil of the operators who kill innovation if it means they might loose control.

I also started installing myth tv so make a home media system for station 40. It’s not fully working, but it seems good. They could learn something from how some web apps like mediawiki and moveabletype which auto create your mysql user for you.
