Uruguay in Hollywood

The big news of the day in Uruguay is the direct to dvd release of the latest Steven Seagal action movie Submerged. The film depicts how the US ambassador to Uruguay is assassinated, there are piqueteros blocking the roads against a military a military coup backed by narco-traffickers, and leftists marching under the banner of ‘revolution’. The thing uruguayans are pointing out tend to be rather straight factual errors, such as the there not actually being any mayan ruins in uruguay and the spanish being spoken with a distinct chicano / mexican accent.

On top of all that, the movie looks terrible. One netflix review said ” Is it possible for an actor to recite lines while sleeping with his eyes open? A great trick, if possible, and now seemingly perfected by Steven Seagal in his latest debacle.” While another reviewer chimed in with ” This movie is so bad, even the DESCRIPTION is wrong - there isn’t’ a single “mutant organism inhabiting the deep” in the entire movie… unless I fell asleep through that part. At any rate - avoid at all costs.”

I of course put it in my netflix queue. I mean, just because it was filmed in bulgaria and not uruguay itself, and it’s basic facts about uruguay are wrong, how often does hollywood produce a movie about uruguay?
