Monologr - Hacking up Flickr Slideshows with Odeo

Kellan, Blaine, and I went down to Yahoo for the Hackday. A few months ago kellan left the rails world to join Flickr. Since all three of us had (do) worked at odeo, and we figured mashing the two sites up would be cool for yahoo’s hackday. We’ve also been doing media activism and finding a good way to tell a video / slide show like story online has been something we’ve wanted for years.

So we hung out at the hackday workshops, went to the beck concert, then rolled up our selves and started hacking. Now, being masochists, we picked some technologies we don’t use a lot, javascript, flash, and css. Normally we do back end hacking, building web services, and the like. But, indymedia is about empowering people to make their own media for social justice, and we’ve been doing indymedia stuff for years, so why not build something cool for hackday which can then be used to make the world a better place, bring about revolution, and all that cool shit.

Monologr – A tool for making visual monologues

Go to monologr.protest.net, enter in a flickr username, your own if you like, and select a photo set. Then it loads up a recording / selecting interface. There’s a bug right now, you need to click on the first photo twice. Then start recording, click on each photo you want to show while you’re talking. It’ll sync them up and redirect you to the slide show. There’s a delay of a minute or so while it processes the audio, you can hit reload if you think the play page is stuck.

That’s it. Simple, clean, easy.

So, check it out, tell me what you think, use it.
