So i was sitting at my mom's kitchen table drinking a cup of tea and waking up this morning when i overheard her talking to a new client. She designs houses and to do a good job she generally needs to know about people and their habits. It started out with the normal stuff, you know, where's the lot, oh there's a house on it, so it's a remodel, and on.
She then said "so does your partner work up here or in the bay area.... and you have two kids.... how old are they? And your partner, does she have any kids? Oh she's a he, your husband! i'm sorry. And does your husband does he have any kids? Yours, oh, you have the same kids!"
I guess it's funny that my mom's assumptions were that because she used the word partner that it was a lesbian relationship and that of course even if that wasn't true just because they were married now their kids were from previous relationships. Perhaps it's a testament to how much the world of arcata has become warped that my mom could accidentally adopt homonormative conventions when dealing with her upper middle class clients.
